We are an informal group of individuals who find it important to connect young adults, ages 18-39, in the Northern Nevada/East Sierra area to local support. We are not a 501(c)3 or officially organized non-profit.
Our mission? To create a network of young adults who have been affected by cancer, as a patient or caregiver (to a young adult- i.e. spouse), in the N. Nevada region to share support and stories.
Why? According to National Cancer Institute’s “Closing the Gap: Research and Care Imperatives for Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer” here are some facts about Young Adult Cancer:
-In 2011, cancer was the leading cause of disease-related death in the AYA population
-The population diagnoses between ages 15 and 39 have seen little to no improvement in cancer survival rates for decades
-The AYA population has the highest uninsured rate of any age group in the country, delaying or restricting care
– Cancer incidence in young adults has increased more than any other age group
What do we believe? We believe that as a young adult different support networks are needed. Young adults have different concerns than the younger or older populations. Dating, working, college, marriage, reproduction are just some of the young adult life factors affected by a cancer diagnosis and treatment. We also believe that the typical “support group” doesn’t always work for young adults. We hope to host small casual meet-ups for coffee or drinks on a monthly basis, and aim to host larger fun group activities quarterly.
